But Allun's face looked set and grave.

"Wait," he said.

They turned a corner and reached the square. Timon was still standing by the bell. A dozen people were gathered around him. Others were moving into the square from laneways all around. Still others were walking quietly away.

Rowan blinked at the scene before him. And in that blink, his hope vanished. The gathering was all wrong. He had been pleased that there were no shouts of panic. But there should have been much more noise than this!

There should have been far more movement, too. There should have been children running, excited by the unexpected call. There should have been people walking briskly around, wanting to hear the news, wanting to know why they had been so rudely wakened.

But there was none of that. There were no children in the gathering. And the adults who were there seemed to be wandering in a daze. Their faces were dreamy and their voices low. Some had not even troubled to pull a coat on over their night-clothes but trailed around in white gowns and shirts, shivering, barefoot and tousled, like ghosts.
